Scagliola (Italian marble stucco: plaster, hide glue, natural pigments), sound system: 2 audio exciters, 1 amplifier, a 3" sound card - looped
190 x 90 x 5 cm
This sound sculpture, placed on the floor, is made of scagliola marble. It takes the form of a flat surface whose anthropomorphic dimensions are inspired by the tatami mat, the mattress, the rug, and ultimately, the gravestone. The viewer is invited to lie down on this marble mat to hear the sound of vibrations and the "song" of the earth diffused within the stone. The black and white drawings, patterns, and veins visible in the stone were created from the spectrogram of Earth vibration recordings made by NASA. The drawn surface on which the body rests to listen, like a recumbent figure or a sleeping body, is none other than the materialization and petrification of the voice of the earth. What we see without hearing corresponds to what we hear without seeing.
